Youth Court – A Window of Opportunity
September 6 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Chief Magistrate Catherine Geason will be joined by Department of Education Youth Court Officer Kym Duggin to discuss the structure of Youth Court and how it provides an opportunity for young people to change their offending lifestyles.
Ms Geason was appointed the state’s first female Chief Magistrate in October last year, after six years on the Magistrates Court of Tasmania. During that six years she served as Youth Justice Court Magistrate, Court Mandated Drug Magistrate and Mental Health Diversion List Magistrate. Ms Geason was also a member of the Anti-Discrimination Tribunal from 2000-2015.
Mr Duggin joined the Department of Education 16 years ago, but he has been involved in community services for more than 30 years, after starting as a youth outreach worker with Stepping Stones in the 1980s. He also worked for Headway, and the Tasmanian Aids Council, and began the state’s first mobile needle exchange.
If you’re interested in youth justice and the role of education in the court system you won’t want to miss this presentation.
