Course Description
Inclusive Language – Disability is an optional addition to the Inclusive Language course. It comprises four units, which together aim to building awareness of language that excludes – its causes and effects, and some potential solutions in your workplace – specifically around disability.
Before enrolling in these units, participants must have already completed the Inclusive Language course.
As with all of our courses, the Inclusive Language – Disability course is co-designed and co-delivered by human ‘books’ and professional inclusion trainers. It comprises 4 units, each a 45 minute Zoom discussion with the course facilitator. For two of these discussions, there will also a human ‘book’ from the Hobart Human Library.
At the end of the course you will receive a certificate of successful completion.
Aims
After completing this Inclusive Language – Disability course, you can expect to have:
- A first-hand understanding of the damage caused by stereotyped thinking and language that excludes people with a disability.
- Practical ideas on how to recognise and challenge stereotypes and promote language that includes people with a disability.
- A heart and mind open to learning more about diversity and inclusion.
Structure
All units must be completed in sequence, with progression dependent on successful completion of each unit.
Unit 1 is a 45-minute live (via Zoom) discussion with the course facilitator and a human ‘book’ from the Hobart Human Library. The human ‘book’ will share their story about life in Tasmania as someone who has a physical/visible disability. Afterwards there will then be an opportunity for you to ask questions and discuss how your workplace could be more inclusive.
Unit 2 is a 45-minute live (via Zoom) discussion with the course facilitator on possible actions to make your workplace more welcoming of people with a disability.
Unit 3 is a 45-minute live (via Zoom) discussion with the course facilitator and a human ‘book’ from the Hobart Human Library. The human ‘book’ will share their story about life in Tasmania as someone who has an invisible disability. Afterwards there will then be an opportunity for you to ask questions and discuss how your workplace could be more inclusive.
Unit 4 is a 45-minute live (via Zoom) discussion with the course facilitator on possible actions to make your workplace more welcoming of people with a disability.
