Course Description
This Inclusive Language course is an online/virtual adaptation of our popular and innovative Hobart Human Library workshop with a specific emphasis on inclusive language in the workplace.
It is about building awareness of language that excludes – its causes and effects, and some potential solutions in your workplace.
It is useful, but not essential, for participants to have already experienced the Hobart Human Library – either our online/virtual course or our face-to-face workshop.
The Hobart Human Library is the starting point for diversity and inclusion training for staff at all levels of the workplace and the first stage of our unique Feel, Think, Do Diversity and Inclusion Training program for workplaces. Other courses include Unconscious Bias and Inclusion Strategies.
The Hobart Human Library uses the art of storytelling to break down barriers and build empathy. It provides a comfortable space for participants to speak with human ‘books’. Human ‘books’ are Tasmanians who have experienced stereotyping, prejudice or discrimination – perhaps because of their culture, sexual orientation, physical or mental wellness, gender, religion or appearance – and trained as community educators.
As with all of our courses, the Inclusive Language course is co-designed and co-delivered by human ‘books’ and professional inclusion trainers.
The course comprises 7 units, each designed to be completed in 45 minutes. The first and last units are completed online and include videos, slideshows, reading and quizzes. All of the other units are 45-minute group discussions with the course facilitator. For two of these discussions, there will also a human ‘book’ from the Hobart Human Library.
At the end of the course you will receive a certificate of successful completion.
Aims
After completing this Inclusive Language course, you can expect to have:
- A first-hand understanding of the damage caused by stereotyped thinking and language that excludes.
- Practical ideas on how to recognise and challenge stereotypes and promote language that includes.
- A heart and mind open to learning more about diversity and inclusion.
Structure
All units must be completed in sequence, with progression dependant on successful completion of each unit.
