Story by Human Book Aster

Have you ever met a transgender person before? Our experiences vary greatly. The intersectionality of gender diversity, with autism and being palawa (Tasmanian Aboriginal), makes for a very unique life experience!

Hi, I’m Aster! I’ve been a human book since 2014. The Hobart Human Library has allowed me to fulfil my passion for human rights through my lived experience story telling. I talk about what my life is like being transmasc/non-binary, proudly palawa as well as autistic.

Over the many years I’ve been a book I’ve been asked pretty much every question imaginable. My favourites are always the questions that show that people are genuinely interested and are thinking about things differently. I’ve had some really nice interactions where I’ve been approached after workshops to thank me for helping them understand gender diversity, or that they know someone who is transitioning and are grateful to have heard my perspective. It always feels good to know I’m making a difference in how people view the queer community.

I think the best thing anyone can do to be more inclusive is to learn more about the people around them and to offer support. Building a better understanding of diversity not only help you grow as an individual, but it also helps you be a better friend, colleague, and overall person.
