Introduction
Every school community is made up of people from different backgrounds, identities, experiences, perspectives and ways of thinking. These differences enrich learning and help create stronger, more connected school communities.
However, diversity alone is not enough. Students, staff and families need to feel welcomed, respected, supported and able to participate fully. When this happens, people experience a sense of belonging.
As educators, the choices we make every day, through our language, expectations, classroom practices and relationships, influence whether people feel included and valued.
This module introduces the key concepts of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, and explores how educators can help create learning environments where everyone can thrive.
Why this matters in schools:
When students and staff feel safe, respected, included and valued, they are more likely to engage, participate, build positive relationships and achieve their full potential.
Important:
Diversity and inclusion are broad and complex topics. This module can only provide a foundation for understanding key concepts and practices.
